Meet the Eco-Council

Meet the Eco Council members for this year...

You will notice the Eco Council has grown in numbers since last year! All of these children are really eager and enthusiastic to make a difference. They work very hard and enjoy telling others about ways to be more Eco friendly.

The Eco Council is represented by pupils elected from across the school and adults including staff members, parent and Governors. This year we welcome four representatives from Year 2 and some keen Year 6 pupils have been asked to be ‘Eco Experts’.

Many of the ‘Eco Experts’ have already been members of the Eco Council in previous years or have shown they are really interested in environmental issues. They will be planning and leading some of our Eco meetings around the themes of climate change and deforestation, sharing their knowledge, ideas and great enthusiasm with others.

Members of Eco Council meet regularly to discuss and implement projects and improvements around the school, thinking about the local and global community as well.

Already this year the Eco Council have been busy. Members have been round the whole school to display various signs and labels to remind us about the small actions we can all do daily which make a big difference.

The signs are there to remind everyone about the importance of turning the lights off, switching off computers, recycling paper and trying to reduce the number of paper towels we use.

The Eco Council members think that the new colourful signs are eye catching and hope that everyone in the school will see them.

In 2008 we were awarded the Green Flag and this school year we will continue to build on the all the previous hard work as well as establishing new projects within the school, including reapplying for our Green Flag.
Read our new and updated Eco Code. Members of the Eco Council thought that the Eco Code needed to be revised to include more of the things we are doing around the school. The main message from our Eco Code is RESPECT THE WORLD.

The Eco Code is there to help everyone remember what they can do to help make our school an Eco-School.

Becoming an Eco-School encourages: pupils to develop thinking skills and make decisions, take responsibility for their own actions, allows for links to be made with the local community and promotes consideration about reducing waste, saving energy and water. Children show respect and care for our each other, our school and the world.

The nine main Eco topics are:

  • Litter
  • Waste minimisation/Recycling
  • Energy
  • Water
  • Transport
  • Healthy Living
  • Biodiversity
  • School Grounds
  • Global Perspective

During the year the Eco Council will meet to learn more about the important issues and will be able to share their knowledge with the rest of the whole school.

Members of the Eco Council have carried out an Environmental Review to identify action points and targets to work towards within the nine main areas.

We want to look at ways to further reduce the amount of electricity we use at school, telling people why it is important to switch electrical equipment off and not leave it on stand-by. This will include exploring the impact of climate change for people all over the world.

The Eco Council think that that our school we are using to much paper so want to try to reduce the amount of paper that is used. The Eco Council will be thinking of different ways to achieve this.

During the year the Eco Council will also be looking at what is means to be a Sustainable School, considering the impact we have on our planet. Sustainability means that we will explore the way we do things individually and collectively, both locally and globally, that will improve the quality of life now, without damaging the planet for the future.

We have also established a special gardening committee, Green Team. This group of children will be responsible for establishing a school garden over the year. We are looking forward to growing our own vegetables.

We are excited to begin working towards becoming a Fair Trade School as well; we have a group of children who will be organising events throughout the whole year to promote awareness and understanding of what Fair Trade means.

Keep yourself up-dated on our progress by asking your Eco Council member, via this webpage, the eco-schools website and Eco display board.
