Pupils in the school’s Art Club have taken the lead on an inspiring project focused on the environmental impact of palm oil, working as courageous advocates for change. All aspects of the project were planned and delivered by the pupils themselves, with support from Mrs Smith, demonstrating impressive independence, teamwork and commitment.
Through engaging presentations, the children explained how palm oil production contributes to deforestation and the destruction of animal habitats, putting species at risk. They also identified a range of everyday products containing palm oil, including chocolate, biscuits and spreads, helping their audience make meaningful real-world connections.
As part of their investigation, pupils carried out a “soap sniffing” activity, comparing different scents and linking their findings to ingredients such as palm oil. They also enjoyed tasting different types of chocolate (lucky them!), considering how ingredients and sourcing can vary. Alongside this, they showcased their creativity by designing and producing animal prints inspired by endangered species.
The Art Club raised an impressive £255, which will be used to adopt animals through the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Pupils across the school will have the opportunity to vote for which animals the school will sponsor, ensuring the whole community is involved in this meaningful cause.
A sincere thank you to Mrs Smith for her support and guidance, and to all the parents who generously purchased prints on Thursday.
