As part of their ‘All About Me’ project, Year R have been painting self-portraits. A great opportunity for the children to explore their own faces through observation of their mirror image and through touch. They initially used paint as a background, matching skin, hair and eye colours. Once dry, the children worked into their paintings with oil pastels to add details such as pupils and eye lashes. Using art media such as pastels a good way for the children to practise and develop their fine motor skills.

Allowing the children time to focus on themselves, helps them to be more confident with their physical selves and helps them to build their own identities.

Prior to this, Year R children have been drawing pictures about themselves: their family and friends; pets;  favourite animals, sports toys etc.
