What have Year 4 been up to in Forest School this term?
Week one started with tool work - using knives, peelers, loppers and laplanders. Children made fairy houses, gnomes (or in Hattie's case a whole family of gnomes) and Tilly made a mushroom.
We learned about the wood wide web, how trees and fungi support each other (Arthur shared his knowledge with us). Children planted seeds, brought up woodchip, built dens, found signs of spring, tuned the compost, weeded the raised beds and Jack, Ethan and Henry replanted an oak tree seedling.
We set up an obstacle course and they led each other across, blind folded - learning trust and communication. Year 4 have been very interested in making pulley systems and rope swings. They also like playing running games . Luckily Forest School provides lots of child-led opportunities for the children. Some chose to make cards with heart-shaped apple prints, others made clay nature art prints or hammered nails into wood slices and tied string around it, in the shape of hearts etc.
For our cooking session, we made apple pancakes - very exciting.
We used 1 grated apple, 1 cup of self raising flour and up to one cup of oat milk. We built a fire together and fried them in oil in our pan. Fearne was a brilliant pancake helper. Harvey used his perseverance skills to split big logs with our new log splitter.
Well done Year 4 - enjoy your Easter break and keep exploring nature.
