On Tuesday 10th February, Bridge School proudly took part in Internet Safety Day 2026. This year’s theme, “Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI,” encouraged pupils across the school to think carefully about how they use technology and artificial intelligence in their daily lives.

With AI increasingly part of children’s online experiences—whether through voice assistants, chatbots, games or homework tools—it is vital that young people develop the confidence and understanding to use smart technology responsibly. Throughout the day, pupils explored how AI can be used positively, while also recognising its limitations and potential risks.

Each class began with a presentation introducing the theme before completing age-appropriate activities to deepen their understanding.

Reception

Our youngest learners were introduced to the concept of technology and eagerly shared the games and apps they enjoy at home. They listened to the story Digiduck, which highlights the consequences of sharing images online. The children were genuinely moved by Digiduck’s experience and discussed how sending a “silly photo” can hurt feelings and lead to exclusion.

They also talked about the many helpful uses of the internet, from finding song lyrics to looking up recipes but recognised that not everything online is true. Most importantly, they understood that if something worries them, they should always tell a trusted adult. Pupils completed worksheets showing the technology they use, how it makes them feel and who they would turn to for help.

Year 1

Year 1 focused on identifying trusted adults who help keep them safe online. After reading Digiduck’s Big Decision by Lindsay Buck, they discussed password safety and the importance of only sharing personal information with trusted adults.

The children reflected on how they use the internet both at school and at home—watching videos, playing games and using learning platforms—and drew pictures of the technology they use. They also illustrated the adults they would go to if they needed support, reinforcing the message that staying safe online is a shared responsibility.

Year 2

Year 2 explored the world of voice assistants, with many pupils sharing experiences of using Alexa or similar devices. They considered how voice assistants can be helpful but also recognised that relying on them too much can make us less independent.

The class compared what humans can do that voice assistants cannot, generating thoughtful responses that highlighted creativity, empathy and critical thinking as uniquely human strengths.

Year 3

Year 3 examined different ways voice assistants can be used and categorised scenarios as safe and fun or unsafe and upsetting. Working in pairs, they debated each example carefully, showing maturity in their reasoning and a growing awareness of digital responsibility.

Year 4

Year 4 focused directly on artificial intelligence. They learnt that asking AI to create jokes about friends can be unkind and that AI-generated homework should always be checked carefully. Pupils recognised that AI is not always accurate and that fact-checking and using their own ideas remain essential skills.

Year 5

Year 5 delved deeper into AI, discussing its real-world applications and weighing its advantages and disadvantages. They worked collaboratively on scenarios involving AI and online communication, offering advice and solutions.

Pupils reflected thoughtfully:
“I learnt more about what AI actually is and what it can do,” shared Leo.
“It can be difficult to tell if someone is joking or being unkind online,” noted Senna.

Their discussions showed impressive critical thinking.

Year 6

Year 6 examined chatbots and considered the risks they may pose. While chatbots can appear friendly and helpful, pupils recognised that they are computer programs - not trusted friends - and that advice from them may not always be appropriate. The clear message: for reliable guidance, always speak to a trusted adult.

Internet Safety Day 2026 was an important reminder that while technology offers incredible opportunities, wise choices and informed thinking are essential. By equipping our pupils with knowledge and confidence, we are helping them navigate the digital world safely, responsibly and positively.
